No matter what your budget is, you’ll find some inspiration from our tips to work for your budget. Whether you have a large office in your home or you work from a desk in another room and want to make the area more zen, we’ve got you covered.
Have A Dedicated Workspace
Before we get started on any decor-specific inspiration, the most important thing when it comes to having a zen and relaxing workspace is to have a dedicated area that you work from. If you just choose different spots around the house to work from, like your sofa one day, kitchen table another and maybe even bedroom if you’re not wanting to get up! The trouble with this is your whole house ends up feeling like a workspace and so it’s often more difficult to unwind and relax after work, as well as get into the working mood during the day. So, assign yourself a space that you work at every day that isn’t used for anything else. You may have the space for an office which is great, or you should have a desk in your home to create that separation. When it comes to decorating to create a home office space that’s zen, you’ll likely find it much easier with one specific spot!
Pick A Calming Colour Palette
Now you’ve got your assigned space, you should pick a calming colour palette. When you have lots going on in your working day, you will likely want quite a simple design for the area that you work in. For some people, this will be a very light and bright colour palette with creams and neutral tones. Other people prefer to work in a darker space, so may have simple emerald green or navy blue walls with gold accents. Everyone feels calm and comfortable in different environments, so perhaps you think about some of your happiest calm memories and try to replicate that in your home. If you’re working on a desk in a room that’s also used for other things, try to carve out your workspace by having a rug under your desk, perhaps an accent wallpaper and a table lamp to help this feel like a calm little corner in your home to work from.
Organise and Declutter
For most people, if there is any element of disorganisation or clutter in your workspace, it’s extremely distracting. So, no matter how big or small your workspace is, have a good declutter and clean. Go through your paperwork, file anything you need and then shred the rest. Get rid of any kind of rubbish or packaging from around your workspace. Polish and hoover the space. If you don’t use something that’s in your immediate workspace, put it into a box under your desk and if you don’t use it for 3 months, you don’t need it. This may take an hour, or a few, but it’s so worth it for the mental clarity you can gain when you spend some time organising and decluttering.
Soft Furnishings
Something that really transforms any space, without you having to spend a fortune, is soft furnishings. You want to be completely comfortable in your space, so adding things like a rug, blanket nearby and luxury cushions for your desk chair will help to add stunning touches to your home whilst also adding some cosy and comfortable features to the space. Something else to consider here is the type of window dressings you have, as you want to be able to control the light coming into the space so it doesn’t distract you from your work. So, think about your curtains and blinds to make sure you’re adding to that comfort.
Focus on The Scent
If you’re into home fragrance, then focusing on the scent for your home office space is key when it comes to relaxation. There’s something about walking into a space and it smelling amazing that just sets you up for the day. Neroli, lavender, chamomile, vanilla and ylang-ylang are known for their calming properties, so you could get a reed diff to enjoy the scent all the time, or you could get candles if they help you to relax. A big trend at the minute is crackle candles, so when you light them, the wick crackles and creates a really relaxing sound. For that extra touch, this could be something to consider!
